If you haven't heard the latest news out of Royal Mail, here it is: the postal provider is looking to bring on tens of thousands of new employees to help them deal with an increased demand of Royal Mail post services during the lead-up to the festive season. Their annual recruitment drive is a reminder to business mail users that the next few months could be a bit hectic.

The Independent reported that Royal Mail is now in the process of recruiting 20,000 temporary workers to help manage the increased demand of Christmas. As in previous years, Royal Mail is expecting a higher volume of parcels as a direct result of increased online shopping.

All hires will be given temporary positions only; contracts run from late October to the first part of January. According to the Independent, the bulk of the work will be available in December. This should be somewhat instructional to you as a business mail user.

Problems Increase with Demand

Business owners instinctively know that with increased demand comes a greater potential for problems. This is just as true for Royal Mail as it is your business. Moreover, because the Christmas holiday season is considered peak season for Royal Mail postal services, it is also peak season for problems ranging from lost mail to late deliveries.

So what can you do as a business mail user? You can take the necessary steps to make sure your own mailroom operations run smoothly. This starts with using a modern mail franking machine that works with the Mailmark system.

You may have an older non-Mailmark machine you have been using thus far. That's fine, except that you're not getting the best possible rates with that machine. You also do not have access to new Mailmark technology that allows for tracking your mail, engaging with your customers, checking the accuracy of your mailing lists, and so on.

If you don't have a franking machine at all, now is as good a time as any to invest in one. We are an authorised Mailmark dealer with a full inventory of franking machines to meet a variety of needs. We can get you up and running in plenty of time to avoid the many pitfalls of business mail during the festive season.

Beyond franked mail, October is the time to go through your mailing lists to make sure all your addresses are accurate. It is a good time to order mailroom supplies including ink and labels, so you're not having to wait for shipments during the busy period.

Royal Mail post services are going to be in high demand for the next several months. Royal Mail's annual employee recruitment drive is a good reminder. Looking to bring on 20,000 temporary workers is a sign that the postal service is expecting a significant increase in capacity beginning in early November. Are you ready for it? If not, now is the time to act.
